Prilosec is a prescribed gastric pill used to treat stomach acid, symptoms of gastro-esophageal reflux disease and other conditions caused by excess stomach acid.
Prilosec may be given along with antibiotics to treat gastric ulcer caused by infection with helicobacter pylori. Prilosec is manufactured by the famous corporation of Procter & Gamble (P&G) and is available at doses of 10 mg, 20 mg or 40 mg of omeprazole.
Much like any other generic drug, generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) is biologically equal to the brand Prilosec and it is simply manufactured and sold at lower price. Generic Prilosec is actually equivalent to brand Prilosec in its efficiency, strength, dosage, ingredients, safety and intended use.
The lining of the stomach produces acid through millions of tiny acid pumps during digestion. During the time of eating, these pumps switch on to produce the acid that breaks down food. Prilosec decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach by blocking many active acid pumps. By reducing the acid in the stomach Prilosec also lessens the chance of having heartburn. Prilosec is most effective when taken before meals. It can be taken with an antacid.
