Prevacid is a prescribed proton pump inhibitor (PPI) medication, used to treat gastric disorders such as ulcers, erosive esophagitis, gastro esophageal reflux, or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Prevacid is manufactured by TAP pharmaceutical inc. and is available at doses of 15 mg and 30 mg.
During digestion, there are cells in the lining of the stomach that contain pumps which produce acid. The burning pain from acid reflux disease is caused when this stomach acid backs up into the esophagus.
Prevacid helps prevent stomach acid production by blocking many of the acid-producing pumps in the lining of the stomach. As a result, the amount of acid backing up into the esophagus is reduced.
Much like any other generic drug, generic Prevacid (Lansoprazole) is biologically equal to the brand Prevacid and it is simply manufactured and sold at lower price. Generic Prevacid is actually equivalent to brand Prevacid in its efficiency, strength, dosage, ingredients, safety and intended use.
Clinically proven, Prevacid was found most effective in treating erosive esophagitis. Approx. 95 % of patients with erosive esophagitis who were taking Prevacid had healed by the 8th week of treatment.
In addition, Prevacid is indicated for use in treating stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers and stomach ulcers caused by continuous use of pain medications and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. aspirin, naproxen and ibuprofen).
